Next to Fizeșu Gherlii there are two protected areas: Lacul Șiucilor and Stufărișul de la Sic. The lake was formed above a salt deposit and is the deepest natural freshwater lake in the Transylvanian Plain. It is the only lake in Transylvania where floating reeds grow, like the one in the Danube Delta. The lake is populated by pike (some even huge, say the local people) and in the two reserves live more than 100 types of birds, among them the common pike, corcodel, coot, wrasse or nugget.
